Knowing About The
Molecule And Side ffects |
Dapoxetine is the generic name of a newer class SSRI (Selective
Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). It is short acting.
Pharmacologically, Dapoxetine is an antidepressant. It was known to
scientists that one of the major side effects of antidepressant was
delayed ejaculation- sometimes inability to reach orgasm. Renowned
biochemist David T. Wong was the creator of this molecule.
On December 28, 2004, Johnson & Johnson submitted the molecule FDA
(Food and Drug Administration) for the treatment of premature
ejaculation with a New Drug Application (NDA). Till date, FDA does
not approve Dapoxetine and it is now on Phase-III clinical trial.
Two clinical trials were completed in 2006 with Dapoxetine. However,
research giants doubt it will get the nod by the FDA very soon
because SSRIs have many side effects after prolong intake. These are
neuropsychiatric disorders, skin reactions, obesity, loss of libido,
nausea, vomiting, headache, gastric upset and generalized weakness.
Therefore, it cannot be said that Dapoxetine can overpower its side
effects.
One of the clinical analyses, over 2600 subjects having different
degrees of premature ejaculatory problems was studied. They were
advised to take placebo (870), 30mg of Dapoxetine (874) or 60mg
Dapoxetine (870). They were instructed to take the tablets 1-3 hours
before sexual intercourse. On an average, at the beginning of the
study, the subjects ejaculated under less than a minute after
penetration. After 12 weeks of study, the trial researchers found
that it became 1.75 minutes among the placebo, 2.78 minutes for
subject taking 30 mg of Dapoxetine and 3.32 minutes for subjects
taking 60 mg of Dapoxetine. It concluded that though Dapoxetine was
helping in premature ejaculatory problems, it should further
evaluated for its other side effects.
